Neurotoxin injectables, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport, and Jeuveau, are popular treatments used to temporarily paralyze muscles and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. These treatments contain a purified and safe form of botulinum toxin A, which is produced by the microbe that causes botulism. When injected, they block nerve impulses sent to muscles, weakening them to the point where they cannot contract, and temporarily eliminating moderately severe furrows and lines.
Neurotoxin injectables are used not only for cosmetic purposes but also for a variety of medical conditions, including excessive sweating, overactive bladder, neck spasms, crossed eyes, chronic back and jaw pain, and migraines. BOTOX®
BOTOX® Cosmetic is manufactured by Allergan, Inc., and is specifically designed to treat permanent furrows and deep wrinkles in the skin that are formed by the continual contraction of facial muscles. Originally approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of eye and muscle spasms, BOTOX Cosmetic quickly became popular for its cosmetic applications. It is used to treat the following:
- Forehead furrows
- Frown lines
- Crow's feet
- Skin bands on the neck
Using a very fine needle, BOTOX Cosmetic is injected directly into facial muscles. Receiving the injections requires no anesthetic, but some aesthetic professionals choose to numb the area with ice packs or a topical anesthetic cream. Results can usually be seen within a few days of treatment and typically last up to four months. Injection-site side effects are usually mild and temporary, including pain, infection, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness, bleeding, and bruising. Normal activities may be resumed immediately after receiving injections.
Dysport
Dysport is another neurotoxin injectable treatment similar to BOTOX Cosmetic. It is used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing the underlying muscles. Dysport is often preferred for larger treatment areas because it spreads more evenly. It is especially effective for treating moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows.
Jeuveau
Jeuveau, often referred to as "Newtox," is a newer neurotoxin treatment designed to improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Like BOTOX Cosmetic and Dysport, Jeuveau works by relaxing the muscles responsible for wrinkle formation, resulting in a smoother and more youthful appearance.
